How the figures are read

Council tax by band

Each council's figures for bands A to H are Table 9 of the MHCLG release for 2026/27, read as published. No band is worked out from another. The figure is the area charge for a home with two adults: it includes the county council where there is one, the police and crime commissioner, the fire authority where it sets a precept, and the average parish precept for the council's area. A home in a parish with its own precept pays a different amount, which is why every band figure carries that caveat.

MHCLG's note on the band table: The ratios of other bands to Band D are: A 6/9; B 7/9; C 8/9; E 11/9; F 13/9; G 15/9; H 18/9.

The two calculations

The change on 2025/26 is this year's published figure less last year's published figure for the same council, from the two band tables, and as a percentage of last year's figure, rounded to one decimal place. It is labelled as calculated wherever it appears. Where a council's ONS code differs between the two tables, as Barnsley's and Sheffield's do between the 2024 to 2025 and 2025 to 2026 tables, no change is shown for that pair of years: ONS issues a new code when an area's boundary changes, so the two figures may not be for the same area.

The monthly figure is the yearly charge divided by ten, because ten monthly instalments is the usual way council tax is paid. It is labelled as such and never as a twelfth.

What is not shown

MHCLG's tables include an adult social care element for councils with social care duties. The technical notes do not define it, and it is not the whole adult social care precept, so the site does not print it.

Comparisons

The national page orders councils by area Band D within each class of council, because MHCLG publishes every council for the same complete year. Band and region pages list councils alphabetically. No page says why a council's figure is higher or lower than another's.
